Important notice regarding applications for the Royal prerogative of mercy
From 1 July 2020, there will be changes to the Royal prerogative of mercy that will affect people wanting to apply to reopen a criminal case. After 1 July, the newly-formed Criminal Cases Review Commission will take over responsibility for referring suspected miscarriages of justice back to the appeal courts.
You can find information about the Criminal Cases Review Commission on our Ministry of Justice website.
For information about the Royal prerogative of mercy, including how existing applications will be handled, see the Governor-General of New Zealand website(external link).
We provide advice to the Minister of Justice on matters involving miscarriages of justice. This includes applications for compensation for wrongful conviction and imprisonment, and applications for the exercise of the Royal prerogative of mercy.
